Middle School Principal

Description:

ASB MISSION
We inspire all of our students to continuous inquiry, empowering them with the skills, courage, optimism, and integrity to pursue their dreams and enhance the lives of others.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY
In 1981 a group of International parents started the American School of Bombay with just 12 students in a room at the American Consulate. The idea was to offer an educational program that would help students make an easy transition from one international setting to another. As the school grew, it moved from the American Consulate to nearby residential apartments. In November of 1998 the school moved to its new state of the art campus in Bandra Kurla, a Mumbai suburb.

The school offers an educational program from Pre-K through grade 12 for students from over 47 nationalities. The student population of 670 is comprised of 28% American, 23% European, 21% from the Indian Subcontinent, and 28% from other nationalities corporations, NGO’s, and government agencies.

ASB is a fully recognized World IB School utilizing an International curriculum, having received full accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the USA. It is also accredited by the Commission of International and Trans Regional Accreditation USA. The International Baccalaureate program was established at ASB in 1998. ASB's International Baccalaureate-Primary Years and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programs are authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

The school in managed by the American School of Bombay Education Trust set up under the terms and conditions laid down by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the parents and faculty for a two-year term. The head of the school and Chief Executive Officer is the Superintendent who is directly responsible to the Board of Trustees. The Superintendent is aided by the High School Principal, Middle School Principal, Elementary School Principal, Director of Finance & Operations, Director of Technology, and Director of Special Projects. This group forms the Leadership Team at ASB.

ASB is organized and operated on a non-profit basis. Virtually all operating revenues are generated from the student fees. The school receives limited assistance from the United States government in the form of an annual grant.

During the 2005 - 2006 school year ASB developed a strategic plan which this year we are beginning to implement. The plan represents a shared vision of the future of ASB. It has been created by community members working together to understand and describe, not only what we want for our community over the next five years, but also what is possible for us to achieve. We are in our first year of implementation. The plan captures the very best of collaborative stakeholder participation but also remains nimble and cognizant of timely execution of concrete steps in achieving our mission. Our plan is alive and guides our efforts at ASB.

TECHNOLOGY
ASB is proud to be a leader in the use of information technology to enhance students’ educational experiences. All students in grades 6 through 12 own a Tablet PC. We believe that by using technology appropriately, students are more highly engaged in their own education, have increased opportunities to develop higher order thinking skills, and are better prepared to participate in a world where technological fluency is essential.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
ASB’s international setting offers a rich array of opportunities for intercultural experiences. The South Asian Inter-School Association (SAISA) provides our student athletes the opportunity to compete in varsity level athletic competition with international schools from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Students also participate in Model United Nations, International Schools Theater Association (ISTA) and international choral and instrumental concerts.
In addition, our after school activity program allows students of all ages the opportunity to participate in a range of activities from wall climbing, gymnastics, taekwondo, to pottery, chess and choir.
Community service activities are an integral part of the school. Students work with local schools, charitable organizations, and NGO’s to provide appropriate support and/or expertise. Our week without walls Program are weeklong trips designed to provide students with cross-cultural, service, and physically challenging experiences. This year the juniors and the seniors went on separate trips to Rishikesh at the foothills of the Indian Himalayas.
