Summer Institutes 2008

Required Preparation for     Instructional Supervision

     MIAMI:  26 June – 2 July 2008
MIAMI: 4-10 July 2008                         LONDON:  4-10 July 2008

1.       Pre-reading materials
Please read the included articles which will be used during the course. Make any relevant notes and questions:
•    “New Trends in Teacher Evaluation”, Charlotte Danielson, Ed. Leadership/ASCD Feb. 2001
•     “Focusing Teacher Evaluations on Student Learning”, by Edward F. Iwanicki, Ed. Leadership/ ASCD, Feb. 2001
•    “It’s Time to Rethink Teacher Supervision and Evaluation”, Kim Marshall, Phi Delta Kappan, June 2005, Vol. 86, Issue 10

After reading the Kim Marshall article “It’s Time to Rethink Teacher Supervision and Evaluation”, please fill in the form 12 Steps to Linking Supervision and Evaluation” according to the status in your current school.

2.       Please bring
•     One copy of the ENTIRE evaluation or appraisal instrument at your school if you have one. The entire instrument includes any written explanation of the evaluation process, timelines, criteria used, plus all forms used in the process by either the teacher or the evaluator.  These documents will be used as part of a learning activity and, thus, will be shared with other participants in your course.
•       Any standards or criteria for teachers used at your school.
•     A class set of student papers.  These can be from any subject area but should have a writing focus (e.g., a writing assignment from English class or writer’s workshop, a written explanation of a math problem or process, a science journal entry, etc.). These will be used during our segment on ‘Looking at Student Work.’
•      Completed “12 Steps to Linking Supervision and Evaluation” form.

3.       Teaching a lesson
As part of the course, prepare a short lesson (10-15 minutes) for a small group of six course participants. If you are currently teaching, the lesson should be based on something you currently teach. If you are not currently teaching, base the lesson on something from your school’s curriculum.  Please be sure to bring any needed materials with you to the course or choose materials that are easily available.  Copies for a small group can be made at the course. Please note: Only a few participants will be teaching their lessons, but all should prepare.

4.       Vignettes
In preparation for the small group sessions in the afternoon please bring a written (one page) case study or vignette, dealing with a problem or situation you have confronted during your professional practice.  Given the content of the Instructional Supervision course, you might want to choose a vignette that has to do with a difficult teacher or an experience with teacher evaluation, if possible.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!
