Required Preparation for

International School Finance

Miami: 18-24 June 2008

1.  Pre-Reading Assignment.
Access the following website and spend enough time to familiarize yourself with the various aspects of financial management so that you have an understanding sufficient to intelligently participate in discussions during the class.  This will probably entail several hours.

Basic Guide to Non-Profit Financial Management

Read the short excerpt “Fine-Tuning Trusteeship: Lessons From the Road” included in the PDF document.

2.  Pre-homework.
Spreadsheets, such as Excel: A significant part of the course will be devoted to learning how to set-up a Long Term Financial Plan and will require basic knowledge of how to use a spreadsheet.  Expert knowledge is not required, but everyone must know how to perform the four basic functions – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

3. Vignettes:  In preparation for the small group sessions in the afternoon, please bring a written (one page) case study or vignette, dealing with a financially-related problem or situation you have confronted during your professional practice.

4.  Items to bring to the course:  In addition to the preparation above, please bring the following items with you to the course:
-A copy of your school mission
-A copy of your current school budget (or summary)
-A copy of the most recent audit of your school. Copies may be in either paper or electronic form. (Note: budgets and audits contain confidential information. Consult with your school director or business manager and use white-out liberally to conceal information which should not be disclosed. Students will not be penalized if their schools are unwilling to share any of these documents.
- Summary of salary and benefits package at your school.
-If at all possible, please bring your laptop computer to this course. (you will be working in small teams so if you do not have a laptop you can pair with someone who does.)

We look forward to seeing you in Miami this summer!
