Essential Skills for International School Counselors
To be  a counselor in an international school requires some unique skills and sensitivities.  The counselor is often relied upon for so much more than a traditional program may have provided the training for. This course explores these skills and provides a practical approach to running an effective counseling program for an international school community.  Through collaborative activities, simulations, and other active participation strategies, participants will explore and practices skill related to:
  • The role of the international school counselor: the idea and the reality
  • 'Transitions': helping students, parents and teachers cope with change
  • 'Kid culture': identifying the culture in a school and affective programs that can either support or change the culture
  • Ethical dilemmas: exploring case studies
  • Counselor as communicator: presentations and publications
  • Academic planning: including break out sessions for elementary and middle/high school counseling

Participants will share strategies, programs, presentations and publications. By the end of the course, all participants will have examined their school's counseling program and will have developed a plan for support and improvement.

University Counseling in the International School

Virtually every international school, through the school’s mission, holds the promise of a university education for every student.  Parents often select an international school over other systems based on their perception that they will be providing their children with a significantly increased opportunity to both have access to and succeed at highly competitive universities worldwide.

What goes on in the effective counseling program in the international school?  Through a series of case studies, collaborative learning strategies, and interactive simulations, participants will:

·        Gain valuable insight into the inner-workings of university admission offices, with a focus on the multiple factors impacting each decision to admit or deny a student

·        Understand the offerings and requirements of university systems in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK

·        Develop the tools needed to help families and students form an effective university application list

·        Fully understand the factors that make for a successful teacher and counselor recommendation

·        Gain a thorough understanding of the common application, with a particular emphasis on writing effective personal statements for admission to highly competitive universities.

·        Increase knowledge of the financial aid and scholarship process in the United States

·        Evaluate the numerous technological tools available to aid students and counselors in the application process

·        Develop a communication plan that may be employed when working with high school parents

As participants you will get a rare inside peak into the process and walk away with resources you can use, including a network of professionals you can draw on. The course will provide dynamic opportunities for new counselors to learn best practices and seasoned professionals to sharpen the saw.

It will be helpful to have use of a laptop computer for this course.
